The NHS is getting ready to commercialise healthcare know-how (clinical and non-clinical) and healthcare delivery in international markets. The idea originally grew out of Lord Darzi’s NHS Global and over the last 2 years this small, independent unit, sponsored by the Department of Health, has been instrumental in creating the right policies and infrastructure necessary for NHS organisations to step out into the international arena, already resulting in the recent launch of Healthcare UK. Now the task of the unit is to encourage and support any publicly funded healthcare organisation in the UK to develop their international capabilities and develop successful strategies for commercialising existing know-how. In addition to strategic support, we already act as the main “match-maker” between overseas businesses looking to partner with NHS organisations and vice versa. We have the most extensive database of current NHS commercial healthcare capabilities, we know who is ready and capable of doing what. As principal partner, I had the opportunity get the overview of current trends and plant the seeds of new business modes and watch over their success.
